As Mary in Montreal noted today, it’s time to bring the plants in. On the prairies the plants have been in the living room for over a week. So far this month, at night it’s been +2ºC, -10ºC and -16ºC. That’s the challenge of gardening here. Always hopeful of a few more nice days at the same time you try to wrestle frozen soil and plants out of a container.
There is a simple end point to the growing season some years. From summer to winter. Frozen green leaves are the sad symbol of yet another missed fall season. But I am thankful that the hockey puck of water that I found in the bottom of my favourite galvanized watering can didn’t split the seam. Glass half full, but frozen.
