Yup, construction has started.
The new park was actively supported by the neighbourhood and will complete the redevelopment of the block, which included construction of the new Board of Education building. The City held consultation meetings with the community including a design charette. So the development of the space reflects user input – which can be tricky in a neighbourhood that does have a certain percentage of transient residents.
But the Beltline is in transition. With more and more people buying homes, condos and apartments downtown; there is a growing sense of community. So our new park should meet the needs of most. It will include a couple of good stands of trees, lighting and possibly a little water. The city put in a sidewalk water feature in the recently renovated historic Central Park (in addition to its big water fountains) and I think something similar is planned.
The new park will also connect to the Board of Education site and make the landscaping on the block make more sense. And it become part of the Heritage Greenway project – which is slowly making its way westward.
Construction is scheduled to be done in 2013, hopefully in time to actually use the park next summer.
