First snowfall and freeze last week, so the end of the gardening season is in sight.
I just needed 2 more weeks to ripen all of the tomatoes. But with the unseasonable colder weather, that wasn’t to be this year. So the three toms are now in the living room where the fruit continues to ripen. I have carrots on the balcony too. They will be harvested this weekend so I can put away all of the containers. Then the troughs will be moved over to the east side of the balcony.
The troughs get moved so they are out of the winter sun and have exposure to precipitation. I’ve found this is the best way to set them up to winter over successfully. I’ll continue to water until it gets consistently below zero at night.
The ponds were emptied a few weeks go, because there is nothing I like less than cleaning out a pond when it’s cold. I don’t mind digging and harvesting in the cold, but I’m definitely a fair-weather water gardener.
So it’s a gentle, graceful decline of the gardening season this year, although a couple of weeks early.
I’m OK with that.
